TECHNOLOGY

A fuel cell is a device that converts the chemical energy contained in the molecular bonds of hydrogen and oxygen into electrical energy. With PEM technology, hydrogen gas is used as fuel and reacts with oxygen in the air to form pure water. Electricity and heat are produced as products of the reaction.

PEM FUEL CELL

A fuel cell system is a group of elements combined in such a way that they operate as a unit. These auxiliary elements such as compressors, pumps, sensors, valves, electrical components and the control unit provide the fuel cell with the necessary supply of hydrogen, air and coolant. The control unit enables safe and reliable operation of the entire fuel cell system.

OUR STORY

Protio was born in 2021 from the need to decarbonise the planet with the goal of zero emissions by 2050. We are a technology company with innovative DNA where our goal is to develop fuel cell systems to reduce the use of fossil fuels. To achieve this goal, we offer our customers sustainable solutions for energy production using hydrogen as an energy vector. Protio is located from the beginning in the Basque Country, in the province of Bizkaia, taking advantage of this technological hub for the development of our fuel cell systems in an industrial environment with great synergies and opportunities with other innovation companies and achieving a strong supply chain.
Our goal is to create zero emission solutions to achieve the decarbonisation of the planet.

OUR FLAGSHIP PROJECT

In 2022 Protio installed the biggest fuel cell installed in Spain as a backup system for a building. This PBox turnkey solution has positioned Protio as one of the leading companies in the Spanish hydrogen sector. This 65kW PBox is installed at the Energy Intelligence Center, a new energy innovation center located in Abanto, Vizcaya.
